This is as close as you can get to a real prototype watch made for the U.S. Navy in the 1950’s 🤿🐟

@bulova released this re-issue in 2021 to commemorate a prototype diver’s watch they made specifically for U.S. Navy divers. Featuring the original case proportions (including a comically narrow 16mm band width by modern standards) and features, Bulova made an extremely faithful recreation of a classic design that delivers a ton of value and specs for the price ☑️

Two features really stand out to me. The first is the moisture indicator at 6 o’clock (which is functional) and was necessary to alert a diver to water egress by changing color. The second feature is the push-click bezel which allows for secure bi-directional turning (which is usually a no-no on dive watches) by requiring the user to put downward pressure on the bezel before allowing it to turn in either direction. Both were original features on the prototype and are still very cool features to have on a modern dive watch 💪🏻👏🏻

Pilot’s watches are a huge category in the watch world. I guess a lot of watch enthusiasts must be pilots, right? 🤣

In all seriousness, pilot’s watches are a vital category as early aviators (before GPS and instruments) relied on accurate and easily-readable time pieces to navigate long distances.

The IWC Pilot’s Mark XVIII is a true aviation-focused watch with a serious pedigree and exhibits all of the hallmark signs of early pilot’s watches: highly legible indices, large hands and an easily-identifiable 12 o’clock indicator.

Today I’m featuring two vintage Seikos in nearly mint condition from the 1960’s and 1970’s (or perhaps the 1980’s).

What’s especially cool about these two references is that they feature two of Seiko’s innovations in metallurgy: Silver Hard Alloy (SHA) which has a Vickers hardness of about 700 (twice the hardness of 316L steel) and tungsten carbide, which measures a whopping 2600 on the hardness scale - which is second only to diamond and is more scratch resistant than sapphires 🔨💎

Let’s talk about affordable watches with fantastic dials…

There’s plenty of watches that cost thousands of dollars with fantastic stamped, guilloche, lacquer or enamel dials - but that doesn’t mean some affordable prices can’t compete.
